The Riksdag voted in favour of a cooperation agreement between EU countries and Afghanistan involving partnership and development efforts. However, the Riksdag voted against a private member's motion, that is, a motion raised as a result of the proposal concerning the cooperation agreement.
This cooperation agreement will form the basis of both the EU and EU countries' links with Afghanistan over the coming decade. It is founded upon binding commitments governing respect for democratic principles, human rights, the rule of law and obligations in terms of the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The agreement aims to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the EU and EU countries on the one hand and Afghanistan on the other hand. This cooperation agreement has applied provisionally since 2017 while waiting for the national parliaments of each EU country to ratify, or approve, the agreement.
